Hashtags for Artists

Managing and posting on social media is important for any artist’s marketing plan. One key important way to help drive your social media is learning how to utilize the hashtag effectively. Understanding how to use the hashtag can help build your online marketing thus leading to collections, collaborations, sales, promotions, and more.

#Basics

The hashtag is a way to link your social media (posts, tweets, pictures, etc) with other similar posts. It’s synonymous with trending topics and online discussions and a good way to track all types of topics in conversation. Hashtags are used on all forms of social media but are heavily used on Twitter (where they first were used) and Instagram, but hashtags can be used on all social media including Facebook and Pinterest. Using hashtags can widen your reach and build your audience by engaging people in conversation and encouraging likes and shares.

To use a hashtag, pair the hashtag symbol with one to three words (with no spaces). You want to make sure that this word is something that would be used for hashtags or searched (the best hashtags to use are ones that are already being used on social media).

#DevelopingYourBrand

You will want to develop your own hashtag or a small series of hashtags to help develop your brand. For example, an artist may use their name as a hashtag or a blog may use the name of the blog. You want to use words that easily identify you, don’t make this difficult. This hashtag you will then use on all or most of your posts. If you are developing a special project or have an event in the future, you can develop a hashtag to help promote the event as well.

#Balance

There are certain social networks that work better with hashtags than others. For example, when using hashtags on Instagram, the more the merrier. You can use up to 30 hashtags on each Instagram post. With Twitter, you want to limit your use to one or two hashtags. As you utilize your networks and interact with other posts, you will begin to see how other artists use the tags on various social networks. Balance your posts and pics with the appropriate number of hashtags to make them effective.

#Follow

Friend and follow your competition, this includes your favorite artists and perhaps some well-known artists too. Include following some large accounts too (accounts with follower counts in the thousands or millions). As you begin to follow other creative accounts, you will begin to see how other artists utilize them. You will also notice different strategies they use on their accounts that help build their following beyond just using the hashtag.

#Privacy

Remember that your profile, page, or account must be public. Why? Well in order to build your following, you need to be accessible by the wider public. You can’t promote your art and get your work out there when you’er hidden or private.
